The origins of Mother's Day - when did it all start?

Although Mother's Day is very popular in many countries and many people buy flowers and gifts for Mother's Day, its origins are unknown to many. In fact, the Greeks were the first to start it, honouring the goddess Rhea (the mother of all gods). The Romans continued this tradition by honouring women and mothers in June with the festival of "Matraliae" (from the Latin "Mater", meaning mother). This custom was unfortunately suppressed by the Catholic faith. Mother's Day as we know it today was introduced in 1908 in memory of Ann Jarvis, a social activist during the Civil War in the United States.
