Use woody stems: Choose sturdy flowering branches with multiple open blooms.
Re-cut stems at an angle: Use a sharp blade to improve water absorption.
Remove most leaves: Keeps water clean and extends flower life.
Change water every 2 days: Use cool water and keep in a shaded area.
Expect short vase life: Azaleas typically last 3-5 days when cut.
Craspedia’s round, golden shape and joyful colour make it a symbol of positivity, health, and optimism. It’s often used in wedding bouquets and festive arrangements to convey fun, cheerfulness, and a light-hearted spirit. Its durability and unique look also reflect individuality and creativity—a perfect bloom for modern romantics, free spirits, and design lovers.
There are two main species used ornamentally:
- Craspedia globosa – The most common, with large, bright yellow flower balls on long, wiry stems.
- Craspedia variabilis – Slightly shorter and often used in native or wildflower-style gardens.
Sow craspedia seeds indoors in early spring (February to April). Use seed trays or small pots with well-draining seed compost, and press the tiny seeds lightly onto the surface — they need light to germinate, so don’t cover them with soil. Keep the compost moist and warm (18-22 °C). Germination takes about 2-3 weeks. Once seedlings are strong enough, harden them off and plant outside after the last frost.
Plant young craspedia plants or seedlings outdoors after the last frost, typically in April or May, depending on your region. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-draining soil.
Craspedia blooms from mid-summer to early autumn, usually from July to September, producing bright yellow, ball-shaped flowers on tall stems. Blooms can last several weeks and are excellent for cutting and drying.
